Do's: Since ottomans have soft surfaces, always place a decorative tray on top to provide a flat, stable base for drinks, remote controls, or candles. Ensure the ottoman's height is roughly one to two inches lower than your sofa cushions to provide the most ergonomic and comfortable position for your legs. Always lift the piece when rearranging your room; dragging it can put sideways pressure on the legs, potentially loosening the screws or scratching your floor.
Don'ts: Avoid forcing the lid shut over bulky items, as this can strain the hinges and warp the frame over time. Avoid perching on the very corners or edges of the ottoman; focusing weight there can cause the internal wood frame to crack or the padding to shift permanently. Never place an ottoman so close to other furniture that it blocks walking paths; aim for at least 12-18 inches of space on all sides for easy movement.
